Hi Elsa Way back in April 1997 myself and my wife Annette traveled to your old house on JackPine Rd.You might remember we arrived early am, you were just getting up and i spotted the love love of my life a little Houdini that had escaped out of the pen,i had him in my arm when we knocked on the door.Later when we went outside to see the rest of the litter i kept picking up the same puppy Willy i guess it is true the animal picks his owner not the other way around. Well this year July 12-2011, I lost Willy suddenly at the Grand young age of 14 and almost 1/2 years,these were blessed year's as i have had 4 Rotties Willy was well beyond in term's of intelligence and character he was not concerned of other dogs but had the temperament around people he loved to cuddle up to friends legs and especially me.It has taken me since loosing Willy to even write to you as i still have tears as i am writing now.I am not quite ready yet i know i will be looking in the near future and i would love the opportunity to again give my love to a new Willy i will attach a few photo's and Birth certificate Thanks Yours Truly Bruce Keller................ 1ST Pic Willy at Five, 2nd Birth certificate, Willy the day we brought him home..................How Sweet is that??????????

I love my Chico babies to bits. All three in the showring are going to Crufts and between them have had Best in show at a companion show, Reserve best in show... still as a puppy at open show, three reserve best puppy in show at open shows and placed at every champ show attended except one. Sue and William and Eddie and Isabelle are brilliant and helped me every step of the way".

Katie comes with a great pedigree and a long tail.

Katie’s aunt Westlodge Mulled Wine (pet name Emily) produced a litter of 8 puppies last year. One of these puppies named Westlodge the Magician at Darkamar (pet name Vernon) , has just been named top UK rottweiler pup for 2010.

Elswick's Kennel took 1st place in the Kennel Class. CH Elswick's Danny Dixon (Danny) was awared V1 in his Open Class. CH Elswick's Chunki Monki (Whizzy) rated a V3 in her class. And, Elswick's New Slant On Life (Mya) received a VP2 - very promising.
The show was held in Dewinton Alberta and judged by Lucy Ang from the States.

The weather was wet and cold but the people were warm and friendly.

We regret to announce the passing of CH Elswick's My Lady Braxton, who passed away on October 3rd 2008. Braxton was born with a heart defect and was expected to live one year. She lived to 7 1/2 years and had a normal active life in a loving home. She loved hunting for squirrels that she would chase up trees. She knew where each squirrel lived. She enjoyed hiking with Micheal and Audra. She will be dearly missed.

The Netherlands has just lifted a 15 year old pit bull ban that made it illegal to own or breed pit bulls. The Dutch government came to the conclusion that a pit bull ban did not decrease dog bite incidents. The country will now focus on enforcing leash laws and owner education programs. This is good news for rottweilers also because the rottie has and is targeted for BSL in various locations around the globe. Other jursidictions are also re-considering their breed specific legislation.

Bloat ("Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus")

This is one nasty medical condition and if you suspect your rottie has it, get immediete Veternarian help. Bloat is caused when excessive amounts of air, fluid and foam in the stomach. If the stomach twists it will pinch off the esophagus and the duodenum thus trapping the air and contents of the stomach. This leads to internal shock and damage to internal organs.If not treated immedietly, it can kill your rottie. Along with some other breeds, rottweilers are prone to bloat.

Peppermint for your Rottweiler

I've been studying up on herbs of late and discovered that peppermint helps to settle upset stomachs, calms nerves, helps to alleviate diarrhea and congestion. It so happens that peppermint grows wild on our property so I'll have to harvest some of it for our rotties. Anything to keep our dogs healthy.

Canine Flu

Canine flu is a newly discovered influenza virus. It is believed to have evolved from an equine flu virus and was first noticed in greyhound racing dogs around 2005. It is highly contagious and all dogs exposed ( including rottweilers) to it become ill because the virus is new and dogs have not developed a natural immunity to it. It is spread in the same way a common cold is spread.The mild form canine flu is similar to kennel cough and the severe form is similar to pneumonia. Make sure your rotties have a strong immune system to weather this storm.

On May 11th 2008 two matches were held at Lavington Park in the Coldstream and Swippee won Best In Match for the first match and Wizzy won Best In Match for the second match. Sonja took best of opposite with Duke in the second match. There were four rottweilers at the match, including two very nice puppies.

CH Jacraila's Scots Pride half brother " CH Future Force at Jacraila" won Best In Show at the LKA in England, winning over 12,500 other dogs. Congradulatons Isabelle.

History of the Rottweiler

History of the Rottweiler
Ask any knowledgeable Rottweiler breeder about the history of the breed and chances are you will be told the Rottweiler originates from the Roman drover dogs, dating back to 74AD. Or, you might be told that the modern Rottweiler originates from Germany. No one will argue the fact that Germans did an excellent job in saving the Rottweiler from extinction and developing the first breed standard. If it weren’t for the dedication of German breeders preserving this wonderful breed, there would be no rottweilers to talk about today.

On the other hand, there’s no consensus with respect to the Roman drover dog connection. This part of the rottie history is at best, educated speculation. The Roman drover dog connection could very well be true but then again there is no way to prove it conclusively. Furthermore, there is another plausible theory about the rottweiler origins that warrants consideration. Around 1928, a book entitled, “German Dogs in Word and Picture” by E. Von Otto Bensheim, talked about a possible Swiss connection concerning the Rottweiler origins. He believed the rottweiler is connected to the Swiss cowherd dogs that were used to bring cattle down from Switzerland into the town of Rottweil. It was also believed that the Bernese Mountain dog shared some common ancestry.

In 1939 a well known expert on the Rottweiler (Hans Korn) wrote about the possibility of the Bullenbeiser dog (ancestor to the Boxer) being introduced to the Rottweiler line. He believed this would account for the broad mouth feature the rottweiler had. The Bullenbeiser also had tiger strips (black stripes on an ash grey background, a colour scheme permitted in the first Rottweiler standard of 1901, which was written 18 years prior in 1883. The Bullenbeiser eventually became extinct by crossbreeding. Like the Rottweiler, the Bullenbeiser was intelligent and also used as a butcher’s dog.

In order to undertake genealogy research for people, you start with yourself and work back every generation, until the trail goes cold. If you are lucky, you are able to trace back 400 years or so, unless you are from royalty. If human genealogy is difficult to trace back beyond 400 years, you can easily understand why it is difficult to trace the Rottweilers genealogy back to 74AD.

Another way of undertaking human genealogy is by tracing your ancestors using DNA. The DNA Ancestry Project using your personal DNA to determine your deep ancestral roots, going back thousands of years. This type of DNA research would be an excellent tool to use in determining where the Rottweiler originates from. A recent DNA project identified 14 ancient breeds as being closest to the wolf. They also report that the Rottweiler is related in heritage and appearance to the Mastiff, Bulldog, Boxer, Bullmastiff, French Bulldog, Minature Bull Terrier, Perro do Presa Canario, Newfoundland and Bernese Mountain dog. 1931: The first Rottweiler was admitted to the AKC Stud Book.

1926: Two types of Rottweilers existed and they were kept separated and not bred with each other. The smaller rottweiler was used for herding stock while the heavier and bigger rottweiler was used for draft work.

1921: The Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (ADRK), was formed in Germany, by amalgamating the two remaining Rottweiler Cubs in Germany.

1921: Rottweiler modified

1913: Standard published by the International Rottweiler Club.

1914: Rottweiler standard modified

1907: The International Rottweiler Club formed and amalgamated with the South German Rottweiler Club.

1907: South German Rottweiler Club formed

1907: Deutsche Rottweiler Club was formed.

Early 1900: Rottweiler was used for police work and the breed was revived and became popular.

1905: Only one Rottweiler is believed to be living in the town or Rottweil. There had to have been other rotties around for a breeding foundation.

1901: The firsts Rottweiler Standard was published but was written in 1883 by Albert Kull – The International Rottweiler and Leonberger Club. This club was short lived. The standard called for: “Preferably and most commonly black with russet or yellow markings over the eyes, at the lips and on the inner and underside of the legs as well as on the bottom. Alternatively, black stripes on an ash grey background with yellow markings, plain red with black nose, or dark wolf grey with black head and saddle, but always with yellow markings. White markings on the chest and legs occur very frequently and are admissible if they are not too extensive.”

1899: The International Rottweiler and Leonberger Club was formed. The rottie coat at that time was usually thick and long.

19th Century: Rail transportation became popular and the need for Rottweiler greatly diminished.

19th Century: Was used as a herding and droving dog for farmers. Also known as the butcher’s dog.

260AD: Romans lost control of Rottweil, then known as Arae Flaviae. The town was renamed to Rot Will, meaning red bricks and tiles. The name then evolved to Rottweil. Rottweil was the hub for cattle markets and was active in commerce. Farmers from neighboring countries brought their cattle to Rottweil for trade, and of course their cattle dogs.

74AD: Romans set up shop in Rottweil and name the town Arae Flaviae. There drover dogs accompanied them to Arae Flaviae

Rottweiler Rescue

Cosmo is a teenager (20 months old)and is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. He needs to learn a few manners but is friendly and energetic. He requires an owner who will be firm with him but kind. Cosmo is presntly receiving some obedience training and is going to the Vet's to be neutered. He is also learning how to socialize with other dogs and enjoys his new doggie friends. There is an adoption fee. elsa@myrotties.com

Breed Specific Legislation

Good news and bad news regarding BSL. If you are planning on travelling in Canada and/or the States, you need to be aware of local by-laws pertaining to breed specific legislation. Some places will require you to muzzle your dog (if it is on the BSL list) while other localities will seize your dog. Needless to say, this can cause you undue hardships and not to mention a good dose of trauma.
The good news is that there are a number of States that have prohibited local municipalities from passing BSL. This list may not be complete but here it is anyway. California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia. The second part of the good news is that some jurisdictions have repealed their BSL, so with a good fight and a anti BSL campaign against the forces of ignorance, BSL can be repealed.

Breed Specific Legislation

I was doing some research on breed specific legislation today and came across some interesting information. In 2005 the Province of Ontario passed legislation banning Pit Bulls. This legislation was challenged in Superior Court and in 2007 the Court upheld the legislation. The Dog Legislation Council of Canada is now appealing the Court decision. In the March 2008 edition, the Dogs In Canada magazine published a story about a meeting held in Banff in October 2008. The meeting was with stake holders from humane societies, civic leaders and industry leaders from around North America, to discuss the topic of dangerous dogs in our communities. These very people would then return to their local communities and share this information with local authorities, the same authorities who may be thinking about introducing BSL (breed specific legislation).

Dr. Nick Branson (an Australian veterinarian) is conducting research into canine behaviour and genetics at the University of Pennsylvania to determine if specific breeds have a genetic predisposition to aggression. The Bankaew dogs of Thailand are known to be aggressive towards people so Dr. N Branson is studying their DNA to see if there is an identifiable marker to aggressive behaviour. As to date, Dr. Branson's research indicates that dog aggression does not appear to be breed specific but does matter when it comes to size. Bigger dogs are stronger so therefore can cause more trauma when biting. To summarize, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that physical appearance or genetics plays a role in aggression.

Dr. Karen L Overall has studied dog bite statistics of 40 years from around the USA. She has theorizes that some human interaction patterns with dogs may trigger aggression. She indicates that just like people who often misinterpret a tail wagging as being friendly, some dogs misinterpret human behaviour and this misinterpret ion can trigger a predator/ prey- excitement resulting in an unprovoked attack, regardless of breed of dog.
